BVI athletics track receives IAAF Class II certification
ROAD TOWN, BVI: The new multi-million dollar eight-lane rubberised
track at the A.O. Shirley Recreation Grounds in the BVI has received
the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) Class II
certification.
Permanent Secretary in the Premier?s Office
Rosalie Adams said the news is a significant victory in the
Government?s endeavours to develop local athletics and improve the
Territory?s suitability for hosting IAAF sanctioned meets.
Adams said confirmation was received from Mondo America Incorporated.
?Class
II certification means we met the required standards such as receiving
a satisfactory report from a qualified surveyor stating that all
markings and levels are correct. In addition it means that our track
surfacing has, among other things, a valid IAAF product certificate,?
she said.
The Permanent Secretary noted that IAAF rules
dictate that international or regional competitions held under its
rules must take place on tracks that have at least a current Class II
Certificate. ?This presents new opportunities for us to compete for the
privilege of hosting significant athletic competitions. When the
stadium project is completed, we will look at those possibilities,? she
said.
The Office is planning an official opening ceremony for
the new track that is expected to be held as part of Education Week.
The Premier?s Office is responsible for managing and supervising
construction of the new eight-lane rubberised track and stadium
development project.
